Australian students launch historic national referendum on Gaza divestment
Australian university students have conducted a nationwide referendum on Gaza, marking the largest coordinated student vote since the anti-apartheid campaigns of the late 20th century. The referendum, held across campuses, called for censuring the government's role in the Gaza conflict and urged universities to sever ties with Israeli weapons companies. This movement echoes historical student activism, drawing parallels to protests against the Vietnam War and South African apartheid. The vote comes amidst ongoing tensions between Israel and Australia, with Prime Minister Anthony Albanese recently announcing plans to recognise the State of Palestine at the United Nations General Assembly in September. The referendum reflects a growing student-led campaign for Palestinian solidarity that has persisted for nearly 100 consecutive weeks. It coincides with Australia's complex relationship with Israel, including indirect contributions to defence projects used by the Israeli military. As universities grapple with their partnerships in the defence sector, students are leveraging their collective voice to influence institutional policies and broader national discourse on the Gaza conflict. Australian police say Bondi Beach attackers inspired by ISIL
Australia is mourning the victims of its worst mass shooting in nearly three decades. The Australian police say the two men accused of carrying out a deadly shooting at a Jewish Hanukkah celebration at Sydney’s Bondi Beach that killed 15 people were “inspired” by the ISIL (ISIS) group. Public vigils honour the lives lost, with calls growing for stricter gun laws and stronger action against hate speech. The Prime Minister has pledged new legislation targeting anti-Semitism. This has sparked a national debate on counter-terrorism measures, as the attackers had prior extremist links. The nation is united in grief, focusing on remembrance and resilience in the wake of the tragedy. Al Jazeera’s Danielle Robertson reports from the site of the attack in Sydney. At least 11 killed in Australia beach shooting targeting Jewish event
A mass shooting at Bondi Beach in the Australian city of Sydney has killed at least 11 people and wounded 29, including two police officers, police say. One man believed to be one of the shooters has also been killed, while a second alleged shooter is in critical condition. Authorities designate the shooting a “terrorist” incident, saying it was “designed to target Sydney’s Jewish community on the first day of Hanukkah”. Video shows a man, identified as “hero” shop owner Ahmed al Ahmed, disarming one of the attackers. Hundreds of people had gathered at the beach for an event called Chanukah by the Sea, which was celebrating the start of the Jewish festival. Prime Minister Anthony Albanese condemned the “targeted” attack, saying the evil that was unleashed was “beyond comprehension.” Al Jazeera’s Danielle Robertson reports from the scene in Sydney. Australia to strengthen gun laws after mass shooting in Sydney’s Bondi Beach
Australia's Prime Minister has described Sunday's mass shooting as an act of pure evil, anti-semitism and terrorism. 15 people were killed after two men opened fire, in a park at Sydney's Bondi Beach. Authorities say two attackers, a father and son, targeted the Jewish community during Hanukkah celebrations. Vigils are now being held as authorities investigate. Al Jazeera’s Danielle Robertson reports from Bondi Beach in in Sydney, Australia. The Australian government’s renewed push to tighten gun laws must not come at the exclusion of broader social reforms, a gun violence expert has told Al Jazeera. Australia introduced some of the world’s strictest gun laws after a shooter killed 35 people in the Tasmanian town of Port Arthur in 1996. Since then, politicians across the political spectrum have embraced “quite inflammatory and divisive rhetoric”, Samara McPhedran, a principal research fellow at Griffith University, told Al Jazeera.
